HOW TO MAKE CHANGE
Last week, we talked about the power of one. And, it got me thinking about another very important number I wanted to share with you.
TWO.
Many years ago, I saw a TED Talk with Derek Sivers. It’s so powerful. I’m just going to share it with you here because in less than three minutes he makes a very compelling point.
Watch it below:
Good stuff, right?
There are so many parts of our world that need change right now. There are so many critical issues that need to be addressed. Systems that need to be updated. Overhauled. Reinvented.
Sometimes I wonder where all of this change is going to come from.
Who is going to lead us out of these messes? Where are our true leaders? How do we get leaders to step up? How do we move good ideas forward?
That’s when I remember shirtless dancing guy.
WHERE ARE THE LEADERS?
Not everyone is going to be shirtless dancing guy. Not everyone is going to stand up + put themselves out there. To be the lone nut.
But, in truth, no leader is a leader until there is a follower.
And another. And another.
So, if we aren’t following + showing others how to follow, how can we possibly expect more leaders?
We need a lot more of that second guy. The one with the guts to be the first one to stand up alongside the lone nut. The one willing to follow + show others how to follow. The one willing to step up + be the outlier long enough to reach that tipping point. That point where it becomes uncomfortable to NOT join the movement.
Our culture tends to glorify (or condemn) the lone nut when in truth there are other roles equally important. Vital - to any movement.
I think it’s time we recognize our role in supporting the voices of change.
We have to stop sitting on the sidelines watching the dance. Wondering where change is going to come from. We have to join the movement for that change. To follow the leader while showing others how to do the same.
You don’t have to be the leader. You don’t have to be first. In fact, the most influential role you ever play might be number two. And, it just might be your most important role yet.
YOUR MISSION:
We all have issues we care about. Values we want to amplify. We all know systems that need improving. Laws that need updating. Institutions that need reform.
How can you play a role in making new leaders by being a good follower?
This week, I challenge you to think about that. Where can you turn one into TWO? Where can you stand up in your life + be that second guy? And, how can you show others how to follow?

IN SUMMARY:
If each of us reading this message today was to stand up + be number two somewhere in the world, WOW! The movements that would be started! It gives me goosebumps to think about it!
See you next week?
