LET’S JOIN TOGETHER
I’m taking a little detour this week from my normal format with The LIFT to see if I can get you to join me for Plastic Free July.
Come on, it’ll be FUN! I promise! Here’s the scoop…
What is Plastic Free July?
Plastic Free July is a global movement to raise awareness + provide solutions to plastic pollution - so we can have cleaner streets, oceans + communities.
All you have to do is take a pledge to refuse single-use plastics for the month of July.
Easy peasy! (LOL)
Why do this?
Well, we have all become very aware of the extent of plastic pollution in our environment + its effect on animals. We know about the ocean garbage patches. We know about straws + turtles. We know about six-pack rings + sea life.
We are now seeing a growing concern about the health impacts of plastic on us as humans.
There is extensive evidence from human studies that exposures to two types of chemicals found in plastics — phthalates and bisphenols — can affect health, especially if the exposure occurs during pregnancy or in early childhood.
We are also beginning to learn the impacts at other stages of high susceptibility like puberty + menopause.
Global plastic production has been growing exponentially since 1950 + it continues to accelerate.
Plastics are EVERYWHERE. Not just in our environment, but in our bodies. Microplastics are in the animals we eat. And, many plastics are made of ‘forever chemicals’ which do not break down in our environment.
The only way to stop them is to stop making them, stop using them.
Plastic Free July is a great way to practice using less plastic while simultaneously raising awareness for those around you. You will be surprised how your commitment will catch on with friends + family. A positive ripple effect!
I did this challenge last summer + not only did I learn a lot, but I also got a lot of friends to join me. It was so cool to see how it caught on + how many people got engaged with it. We shared ideas + alternatives with each other throughout the month. We cheered each other on. It was fun!
LET’S DO IT!
All you have to do is take the pledge to refuse single-use plastics for the month of July.
You don’t have to be perfect. Just take the pledge + do your best.
